A bipartisan group of House lawmakers is working on legislation that would create a joint congressional panel to find a permanent fix for the Highway Trust fund that is due to run out of money by June, including whether unspecified triggers could compel action. Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) backs a long-term funding fix for the Highway fund, since Congress has had to periodically inject general fund money into the highway fund since 2008 to supplement the increasingly inadequate gas tax revenue. Accordingly, some Members from both parties in Congress have discussed an increase in the gas tax with gas prices low, despite resistance from GOP leaders.
