OmniSource vehicle maintenance manager provides outstanding contributions to vehicle safety
(Vancouver, BC) – Francis (Frank) Duran of OmniSource in Lima, Ohio was presented with the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) first-ever Golden Wrench Award for exhibiting outstanding efforts, achievements, and contributions during his 35 year career in vehicle maintenance.
“This is the first year that we have recognized a Golden Wrench Award winner and Frank’s commitment to safety and leadership goes above and beyond. He is setting the pace for others to follow,” said ReMA Transportation Safety Director Commodor Hall.
Just a few of his contributions included working with OSHA and others in the industry to develop a compliant handrail for material handlers versus using full body fall protection. He worked with an engineer to develop a tool for bulging trailer walls. The hydraulic tool pushes the walls in or out on the trailers and roll off containers as needed. Frank was also instrumental in fabricating a tire torque station to ensure the proper installation of tires, including torque calibration, and a job training aid. Also during the past three years Frank has obtained over 180 hours of safety and heavy duty maintenance training.
“When Frank joined the OmniSource team his tool box was not closed, it remained open and he continues to strive to add new tools and knowledge,” said Todd Dilbone, Lima division manager for OmniSource.
When he is not at work, Frank also believes in giving back to the community. He has been an American Red Cross volunteer, aquatic swim lessons instructor, lifeguard for the YMCA and city pools. He has also been a Tri-county instructor for CPR, AED, First-aid and Lifeguarding / Wilderness First-aid.
The Golden Wrench Award is based on the following criteria:
Other criteria taken into account are contributions to improving company vehicle maintenance, letters of appreciation, deeds of heroism on or off the job, and civic and fraternal organizations.
The award was presented to Mr. Duran at ISRI’s 2015 Convention in Vancouver. In addition to travel to and lodging at the Convention, he received a crystal trophy and a personalized certificate.
