2016 ReMA Circle of Safety Excellenceâ„¢ Application Period Open

Feb 9, 2016, 09:31 AM by Mark Carpenter

(Washington, DC) – The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), the Voice of the Recycling Industry™, today announced the 2016 application period for the Circle of Safety ExcellenceTM is currently open. The Circle of Safety Excellence™, a member-driven effort to promote and encourage safety in the workplace, brings like-minded companies together to share safety data and best practices for the betterment of their own safety program and the industry in general.

“Safety is a core value of the recycling industry,” said Terry Cirone, vice president of safety for ISRI. “The Circle of Safety Excellence shows that ReMA shares a commitment with our members to do all we can for the betterment of safety in the industry.”

Companies interested in membership for the first time can now complete the application online, including the submission of company data. Returning members will need to reapply by entering company injury frequency data for the year 2015. All new applicants and returning members must submit their company's information no later than March 1st in order to be included in the initial benchmarking reports to be released at ISRI2016, ISRI’s convention and exposition, held April 2-7, in Las Vegas. Those interested in applying should contact Terry Cirone for further instructions on filling out the application.

The ReMA Circle of Safety Excellence™ is open to all active ReMA members located within the United States who process or consume scrap material and are committed to operating safely. It is designed to bring together those companies willing to share certain specified injury statistical data in order for them to be able to benchmark their operations with other's in the industry and learn from each other. Membership in the Circle of Safety Excellence™ is a demonstration of an individual company’s commitment to continuous improvement, and the industry’s commitment to the safety of all employees and the communities it serves.

Those companies in the Circle must:

  • Have a safety management program - with certain key elements as defined by OSHA - in place at all facilities;
  • Be willing to share injury data on an annual basis and participate in a group benchmarking program; and
  • Along with ISRI, have a willingness to outreach to others in the industry regarding the promotion of safe practices.

There were 97 members of the Circle of Safety Excellence™ in 2015. More information on the Circle can be found on the ISRI Safety website.
