(Washington, DC) – The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) recently updated its Scrap Specifications Circular to include new specifications for Flexible Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) Plastic scrap. The new specifications were approved at the ReMA Convention Board and Governance Meetings on April 16, 2018.
This specification addition is intended to more accurately reflect the plastic scrap commodities currently being traded in the marketplace. It is part of an ongoing effort by ISRI’s Plastics Division to provide the tools needed to trade in multiple grades of plastic resin. This specification, along with the recently developed Rigid PVC specification, further expand the breadth and depth of the plastics section of ISRI’s Scrap Specifications Circular, the only publication where a recycler can find specifications for both post-consumer and post-industrial plastics. The new specification, which can also be found on page 42, is as follows:
Flexible PVC
Description: Typically consists of molding, weather stripping, flexible tubing, purging, battery covers, medical tubing, auto decals, flexible films and sheeting. It is typically resistant to chemicals, non-porous and extruded. It can be found in long profiles and can be wound onto a reel.
Product: PVC Bale
Source: Post-Consumer or Post Industrial (including Pre-consumer)
Technical Information: Durometer Level less than 90A
Explanation of the Durometer Scale: Explanation of the Shore Scale: Shore durometer measurement devices can be used to measure the indentation of a prescribed needle into the material. The test method conforms to ASTM D2240. Flexible PVC is typically measured using the A scale.
Contamination:
Prohibitives – material not accepted at any level, 0% allowed.
Contamination material allowed at small percentages
General: Refer to the General Information section for additional information.
ISRI’s Scrap Specifications Circular provides industry guidelines for buying and selling a variety of processed scrap commodities, including ferrous, nonferrous, paper, plastics, electronics, rubber, and glass. More information about the rules governing the procedures from the addition, amendment, or withdrawal of ISRI’s scrap specifications, can be found in the Scrap Specifications Circular.
