Chairman's Message

Nonnferrous scrap metal recyclers continue to face a wide range of challenges including volatile commodity prices, the shifting global trade landscape, and on-going fallout from China’s trade restrictions. Given the rapidly changing market conditions in China and around the globe, keeping up with market developments both in the United States and overseas has never been more critical. This edition of ISRI’s Nonferrous Beat provides updates on primary and secondary nonferrous market developments along with industry news and the new USMCA trade agreement.

For the outlook on what scrap market participants can expect going forward, I would highly encourage you to attend the nonferrous programs and spotlights at the upcoming ISRI National Convention and Exposition to be held in Los Angeles in April. We have an extremely strong line-up of speakers and moderators at our nickel/stainless, aluminum, and copper spotlights this year, with details provided below. Look for additional speaker updates as the Convention approaches.

There are a couple of other meetings that I would encourage our nonferrous division members to attend in Los Angeles in addition to the division meeting to be held on April 7, 2019, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. You should also try to attend the next meeting of the new Specifications Working Group on April 7 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. as well as the ISRI-CMRA meeting to be held on April 9 starting at 11:45 a.m. The Specifications Working Group is actively encouraging nonferrous and other commodity division members to review the existing ReMA specifications and submit recommendations on how our specs can be brought up to date. The meeting with the CMRA will also provide an opportunity to discuss how ISRI’s specifications are used internationally, along with an update on developments in China.

If you have any questions about ISRI’s nonferrous division, convention programming, specifications, or other issues, please don’t hesitate to contact either myself of our nonferrous division liaison Joe Pickard.

Thanks very much and I look forward to seeing you all in Los Angeles!

Sincerely,
Andy Wahl, Nonferrous Division Chair
