Recognizing and rewarding the recycling industry’s best in demonstrating core safety values

(Washington, DC) – The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) announced today that the entry period for both the 2021 Transportation Safety Awards and the Circle of Safety Excellence™ (COSE) Occupational Awards is open. The Transportation Awards, sponsored by the RecycleGuard® Insurance Program, now in its ninth year, recognizes those with a superior record of safety in the field of transportation. The COSE Occupational Awards recognize COSE member companies for an outstanding commitment to the safety of their employees by instilling core safety values and exhibiting continuous improvement in safety programs and worker incident reduction.

“The need for good driving habits and driver safety directly impacts not just the individual driver of a company, but the public at large,” said Commodor Hall, ISRI’s senior director of safety. “Those that demonstrate safety as a core value above and beyond others in how they drive, train staff, and maintain vehicles should be recognized for their efforts. Both of these awards recognize those who raise the bar when it comes to safety through the implementation of innovative and effective safety programs.

The Transportation Safety Awards include:

The Best Fleet Awards will be presented to the ReMA member with the lowest vehicle crash rate for the 2020 calendar year in each of four classes, determined by vehicle miles traveled (VMT).

The Pacesetter Awards will be granted to the ReMA member with the lowest 36-month combined crash rate in each of the four classes, determined by VMT.

The Driver of the Year Award will be awarded to the commercial vehicle driver with the best 20-year safe driving record. The winner will receive $500, trophy, leather jacket, and will be honored virtually during the ReMA Annual Convention & Exposition in April of 2021.

The ISRI Golden Wrench Award will be given to the best commercial vehicle maintenance technician or manager who exhibits outstanding efforts, achievements, and contributions to ensure that commercial vehicles are safe on the road. The winner will be honored virtually during the ReMA Annual Convention & Exposition in April of 2021.

COSE is an initiative offered by ReMA to help improve worker, vehicle, and facility safety within the recycling industry. The COSE members consist of like-minded companies which voluntarily come forward to share best practices and safety data for the betterment of their own safety operation, and at the same time be recognized by ReMA for their commitment to safety.

The COSE Awards include:

The Best-in-Class Award will be granted to the COSE member company or facility with the lowest OSHA Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) for the 2020 calendar year.

The Superior Achievement Award will be granted to the COSE member company or facility that has achieved an OSHA TRIR of .75 or less for the 2020 calendar year.

The Rising Star Award will be granted to the COSE member facility that has achieved an OSHA TRIR of 2.65 or less for the 2020 calendar year.

Entry forms and additional information for both awards can be found on ISRI’s website. All entries are due by March 31, 2021. The awards will be presented during ISRI’s Annual Convention and Exposition, held virtually in April of 2021.
