ISRI staff sat down with Senator Wyden to explain the severe impacts the West Coast ports worker slowdown had on the scrap recycling industry.
In that
discussion, ReMA reminded the Senator of how important exports are to the scrap
recycling industry and how ReMA members had to redirect their shipments through
other ports as far away as Texas. Senator Wyden, who is very familiar
with the scrap recycling industry, reiterated his concerns about these types of
unfortunate and unnecessary occurrences that cause severe economic damage to
the economy. The Senator was very receptive to legislative efforts to
help monitor and head off similar occurrences whether they be on the West
Coast, the Gulf Coast or the East Coast. Howard Farber was instrumental in this
event in order to ensure the Senator heard directly from the ReMA about the
nearly 10 month West Coast ports disruption.
