Recycling: The Key to Sustainability, was the theme of the 2023 ReMA and JASON Learning Youth Recycling Awareness Video and Poster contest. Over 100 contestants in grades K-12 submitted original posters or videos that communicated the theme of sustainability. It was a tough choice with so many creative projects submitted.
ISRI and JASON Learning flew the winners out to the ISRI2023 Convention and Exposition and presented their awards during the opening general session of the conference.
“It’s exciting to see the ingenuity and creativity of this year’s Youth Video and Poster contest entries, and the excellence exhibited in presenting the message of recycling as the key to sustainability,” said ReMA President Robin Wiener. “By combining STEM and elements of the recycled materials industry, winners highlighted the importance of recycling to the continuation of a resilient planet.”
This year’s Poster Contest Winner is Barbie Lin, an 8th grade student at Myra S. Barnes Intermediate School 24 in Staten Island, New York. Lin’s teacher is Michele Corio.
“Recycling is more than tossing an item into a bin. It’s a mindset.” Barbie Lin, Winner of the 2022-2023 Youth Recycling Poster Contest.
“JASON Learning is proud to support the ReMA Youth Recycling Contest, which showcases the incredible work of students across the country who have dedicated themselves to learning about sustainability and recycling,” said Dr. Eleanor Smalley, President and CEO of JASON Learning. “Although five states are represented from the finalists, we had over 150 entries from across 11 states: Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. It takes a lot of effort to participate in this contest, and we are thrilled to see so many educators using our open-source recycling curriculum to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders.”
The Video Contest Winners are fifth graders Bailey Maltese, Yaesung Kim, and Ashvin Saini, on Team Blue Steel, from Willow Springs Elementary in Fairfax, Virginia. Team Blue Steel’s teacher is Logan Williams.
“We must all create a more sustainable planet…ISRI is key. Thank you for being part of the solution to create a sustainable planet.” Team Blue Steel, Winners of the 2022-2023 Youth Recycling Video Contest
