Howard M. Meyers and Sandy Shapiro were honored with the prestigious Phoenix Award at the Philadelphia Metals Association’s ceremony December 3, 1987. Here are highlights of the event.

Howard M. Meyers and Sandy Shapiro, former co-presidents of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), received the Philadelphia Metals Association Phoenix Award December 3, 1987 for their efforts in "successfully guiding the merger of ISIS and NARI."

Daniel Schwab, Franklin Smelting & Refining Corp., president of the association, pledged his group's support "to help the new organization maintain its goals." He said, "It is extremely important that all of us within our new organization, ISRI, understand the organization and our respective roles within it. ReMA should be and will be a much stronger organization than either NARI or ISIS was, provided that we all work together to give it a strong foundation."

Stanton A. Moss, Stanton A. Moss, Inc., who presented the award, commented on the timing of the merger. "The time was right," he said, "because two men knew the time was right and were willing to devote much time and effort to see that their plan would not get sidetracked by petty differences and minor misunderstandings."

Moss added that the Phoenix Award Committee met by telephone the evening following the merger and decided to give Meyers and Shapiro the 1987 award. The choice was unanimous.

This was the first time the Phoenix Award was presented to two individuals.

Accepting the award, Shapiro said that it took a lot of courageous people to make the merger work. "It was one of our proudest moments," he said, "as people put emotion aside for the best interests of their industry. Consumers and processors all have the same problems," he continued, "and together we're going to lick them."

Meyers, too, sounded the theme of cooperation, emphasizing the need "to work together as an industry to bring logic to Washington on environmental issues. We know what we must do, and we know how hard it is to make legislators and regulators realize just how difficult our situation is."

Warren B. Goodman, Metallurgical Products Co., who served as toastmaster for the association's 59th annual dinner, introduced two previous award winners who were present: Albert W. Spitz, who received the award in 1981, and ReMA Executive Director Herschel Cutler, the 1985 recipient.
