Brussels,
headquarters of the Bureau International de la Recuperation (BIR), is the
location for BIR's fall convention, to be held October 29-31 at the
Brussels Sheraton Hotel. Approximately 800 to 900 delegates are expected
at the meeting, which will include discussions of the commercial,
technical, and legal aspects of the recycling industry, as well as waste
management and environmental legislation issues.
Plans
are still being finalized, but the association is investigating the
possibility of inviting speakers from three organizations: the
Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations
Environment Program, and the European Commission.
Division
and committee meetings begin on Monday, October 29, when the textile
division and charitable collections roundtable, the plastics roundtable,
the paper division, the finance committee, the municipal waste committee,
and the glass committee hold their sessions. Tuesday's sessions include
meetings of the technical committee of the nonferrous division, the
nonferrous metals division, and the environment committee. On Wednesday,
October 31, the stainless steel and special alloys committee and the
ferrous division and shredder committee meet.
Simultaneous
interpretation in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish is
available at the plenary meetings. In addition, a Reuters video screen
will provide attendees with up-to-the-minute London Metal Exchange and
COMEX quotations.
The
highlight of the social program is the welcoming cocktail party, set to
take place Monday evening at the Salle des Mariages Room in Brussels Town
Hall at Grand Place, one of the city's most famous sites.
Three
sightseeing tours are planned: Brussels City; the cities of Ghent and
Bruges; and Waterloo--the famous battle site--and Gaasbeek Castle.
For
additional information on BIR and the Brussels convention, contact Francis
Veys, BIR secretary general, Place du Samedi 13-Bte 4, B-1000 Brussels,
Belgium; 32-2-217-8251.
[SIDEBAR]
All
meetings, divisional luncheons, and trading sessions will be held at the
Brussels Sheraton Hotel. This schedule is tentative and may still be
subject to slight changes.
Plenary
meetings are open to all registered delegates.
Divisional
luncheons and social events are reserved for delegates who have indicated
their requests on their registration form and have the corresponding
ticket.
