March/April 1993
Almost everyone in the industry will agree that 1992 wasn't an easy year for scrap recycling, but things are bound to be better this year. The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) (Washington, D.C.) is doing its part with its session-packed 1993 convention and exposition, which promises to live up to its theme: "Expanding Your Horizons."
The convention, set for March 13-16 at the Marriott's Orlando (Fla.) World Center, features such a wide array of committee meetings, receptions, and speakers that everyone will find events of interest to attend. And once again, you can see for yourself what leading scrap firms, equipment manufacturers, consultants, and others that serve the industry have to offer at the scrap recycling exposition (see exhibitor list beginning on page XX).
While the schedule is indeed jam-packed with sessions, there are plenty of opportunities to take full advantage of the Orlando area's entertainment, cultural, and athletic offerings—including ISRI-planned events as well as those you schedule on your own. In addition, for the first time, ReMA has arranged exciting children's programming for those times when parents are apt to be busiest with convention activities.
Listen Up
A diverse group of experts on a variety of subjects pertinent to the scrap industry are scheduled to speak throughout the convention. On Sunday morning, March 14, Jan C. Scruggs, a Vietnam veteran who raised more than $8 million for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.—despite widespread public criticism and the Senate Veterans' Committee failure to take action in building a memorial—offers the keynote address on "The Power of Commitment."
Earlier that morning, ReMA President Arnold G. Gachman of Gachman Metals & Recycling Co. (Fort Worth, Texas) presents his annual report on the state of the industry when he presides at the "town meeting." And lawyer and author Jeff Blackman gives his tips on effective selling in a competitive marketplace Sunday afternoon.
Monday starts off with Ken Blanchard's discussion of "Management in the '90s," in which the author of The One-Minute Manager divulges information that has benefitted Fortune 500 companies and small enterprises alike. On Tuesday, Jane Bryant Quinn, author of Making the Best of Your Money and a frequent television commentator, presents a comprehensive guide to planning personal finances. The special speaking roster concludes on Tuesday afternoon with negotiation expert Herb Cohen, who gives his views on his specialty.
ISRI committees and commodity divisions have put together a variety of sessions and workshops that deal with today's most pertinent issues. The environment committee sponsors a session on environmental management designed to answer many of the questions raised at ReMA's Environmental Operating Guidelines seminars, on Sunday afternoon, March 14. Later in the afternoon, getting to know potential consumers of specific commodities is easy when you wear special "commodity-coded" stickers on your badge at the "Meet the Consumers" session. And before breaking for dinner, choose from a number of different sessions that include an update on Superfund potentially responsible party notification, company ownership transitions, and outlooks on both nickel/stainless steel and aluminum, with comments from industry leaders.
The next morning, March 15, the commodities in the spotlight are copper and ferrous. Then, a number of insurance experts explain why insurance should be treated as a commodity as well, in order to steer clear of bad deals. The public relations committee brings up the question, "Does a Crisis Have to Mean Disaster?" later in the afternoon. The discussion approaches such issues as identifying potential danger areas, communicating with public officials and the media, and preventive safety issues.
Make the most of Tuesday, March 16—the last day of convention—by attending morning sessions that focus on potential changes in labor relations under the Clinton administration, controlling and managing costs of site cleanups, and the basics of the rubber recycling business. Afternoon options include a program on automotive recycling featuring representatives from auto manufacturers, scrap firms, and recycling associations; "Recognizing and Dealing with Fraudulent Workers' Compensation Claims," which aims at helping you cut back on unnecessary claims; and the nonferrous division's session on the new secondary aluminum contract on the London Metal Exchange.
All Work and No Play?
Absolutely not! In addition to the children's programs, there are fun and games for adults, too. Full convention registrants can brush up on their tennis and golf games at special free clinics, and display their athletic prowess in tournaments for both sports. Hop on the shopping shuttles that run throughout both Saturday, March 13, and Monday, March 15, to check out eastern Florida 's finest malls and outlet shopping, including the Disney Village Marketplace, Winter Park, and the Mercado Mediterranean Village/Belz Factory Outlet World.
Two gala evenings of entertainment—that ring in and cap off the convention, respectively—give you a chance to relax and catch up with your scrap colleagues. After a day of division meetings, spend "Another Day in Paradise," a cocktail buffet with a decidedly "island" beat. Reggae music sets the tone for an evening of Caribbean-style cooking, crab-racing, and dancing. And on Tuesday night, March 16, be prepared to lose yourself in the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber at the elegant closing night dinner dance gala.
