March/April 1995

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) (Washington, D.C.) soars into Las Vegas March 19-22 for its 1995 convention and exposition—an industry event that convention organizers promise will be different from past conventions. Indeed, "Catching the Winds of Change," the theme of this year's convention, will be apparent in the physical arrangement of the convention space as well as the planned activities, which include a full program of speakers, committee meetings, workshops, and social events.

Political, Business, and Steel Experts Fill out Guest Speaker Roster

The roster of non-industry speakers this year includes Richard "Dick" Cheney, who will deliver the opening session address on Sunday evening. Convention attendees will probably remember that Cheney was the U.S. Secretary of Defense under President Bush from 1989 to 1993. Prior to that, he was elected six times to serve as Wyoming's only representative in the House, where, in 1988, he became the House Republican whip.

John G. Stoessinger, another name from the political spotlight, will deliver a speech on Monday morning exploring the U.S. race for economic dominance in light of the North American Free Trade Agreement, a merging European community, and a growing Asia, and what these developments will mean to businesses in the United States . Stoessinger is a political analyst, author, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The conventions spouse lunch, on Tuesday afternoon, will feature speaker Leonore Hausner, a school consultant and specialist in family interaction and crisis intervention. She will also be part of a program Wednesday morning, joining family business expert Peter Davis in a session on the unique issues faced by family- owned and -operated businesses. Davis is the founder and director of the University of Pennsylvania 's Wharton School Division of Family Business Studies (Philadelphia).

The convention program will also feature a special steel industry panel on Wednesday morning. Among the speakers: Peter Marcus of Paine Webber Inc. (New York City), John Correnti of Nucor Corp. (Charlotte, N.C.), Keith Busse of Steel Dynamics Inc. (Butler Ind.), and Robert Pasquarelli of New Jersey Steel Corp. (Sayreville, N.J.), who will discuss how advancing mill technologies will affect the scrap industry in coming years.

The Recycling Specialists

Of course, there will be plenty of other recycling industry-specific sessions held throughout the convention.

For instance, a workshop exploring scrap quality control issues is scheduled for Monday afternoon. Featuring an “open-microphone” discussion, the program will be moderated by ReMA President Cap Grossman of Grossman Iron & Steel Co. (St. Louis) and is designed to allow an exchange of ideas and information involving quality control problems and solutions. Later that afternoon, Peter Koros of LTV Corp. (Independence, Ohio) and Paul Kruesi of Southern Foundry Supply Inc. (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will explore the growing issue of dezincing galvanized steel scrap and the emerging results of dezincing research being conducted by steel companies.

And in other commodity-focused workshops set for Monday, Carl Fischer of RSR Corp. (Dallas) will offer advice on the proper handling and transporting of scrap automotive batteries, and Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (Battle Creek, Mich.) personnel will clarify policy changes that may affect the purchase of government surplus scrap.

Looking to expand your business horizons? “Profit$ from Scrap Paper: A Processor’s Perspective,” scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, could help. The session, designed for metal processors interested in finding out more about the scrap paper industry, will include discussion on how to buy, grade, bale, and market scrap paper, as well as other basics of running a scrap paper operation. The speakers for this workshop will be Martin Davis of Midland Iron & Steel Corp. (Moline Ill.), Al Kublin of Simco Recycling Corp. (Miami), Ray Petermeyer of E-Z Recycling Co. (Portland, Ore.), and Steve Vento of William Goodman & Sons Inc. (Sunrise, Fla.).

Also in the realm of nonmetallics, Tuesday’s Program will include a workshop examining the entire glass recycling process—from processing equipment to quality control to markets. Leading the discussion will be Jerald Bannister of Owens-Brockway Glass (Godfrey Ill.), Bruce Brenner of Cycle Systems Inc. (Roanoke, Va.), Paul Hummel of Ball Glass (Muncie, Ind.), Clifford Klotz of American National Can Co. (Chicago), and Kathy Richter of Anchor Glass (Tampa, Fla.).

Getting back to some business concerns of importance to all scrap recyclers, Monday’s schedule includes a safety workshop geared toward smaller businesses, which will focus on how an effective safety program can benefit employees and improve a company’s bottom line. Scheduled to speak at this meeting are George Ginsburg of Jacobson Metal Co. (Chesapeake, Va.) and Sandy Shadrow of SOS Metals Inc. (Pico Rivera, Calif.).

And on Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency’s new Clean Air Act operating permit program will be the topic of discussion at a workshop that will illustrate and explain the program and how it will affect the scrap industry. The session will also explore how to determine if your business is subject to permitting, and what steps to take to make the process efficient and cost-effective.

For those new to the industry, a session on Monday titled “Meeting the ‘Sell’ Challenge" will delve into basic sales and customer service skills, such as how to make calls to potential customers, what vital information sellers should have available when calling on a customer, and how to establish and maintain good relationships with customers. Scheduled speakers for the program are David Hochberg of Reserve Iron & Metal (Chicago), Larry Katz of Delta Group Inc. (Muskego, Wis.), and John Mike of Sims-LMC Recyclers (Richmond Calif.).

Rounding out the workshop schedule is a session on family business and succession led by A1 Woodward of the Woodward Financial Group Inc. (Denver) and a media relations program, both set for Tuesday. The latter session will feature Evelyn Haught, ReMA's director of public relations, Richard S. Kahlenberg of the Los Angeles Timesand Kathleen Meade of the National Recycling Coalition (Washington, D.C.), who will collectively discuss why the scrap recycling industry is frequently overlooked in media coverage of recycling efforts and innovations.

In addition to these workshops, the convention will also offer commodity spotlights on Monday and Tuesday, with speakers examining the world market fundamentals for aluminum, nickel and stainless steel, copper, ferrous, and precious metals. Robin Adams of Resource Strategies Inc. (Exton, Pa.) and George T. Haymaker of Kaiser Aluminum Corp. (Houston) will speak at the aluminum spotlight, and Francois G. Sauvage of Eramet SLN (Paris) is the scheduled speaker at the nickel and stainless steel spotlight. The copper spotlight will feature Jim Kerr of Asarco Inc. (New York City) and William Burson of Halstead Metal Products (Wynne, Ark.). Francis P. Mangano of LTV Corp. (Cleveland) and John Johnson of CRU International (London) will address the ferrous group, while Joe Rosta of CPM Group (New York City) will speak at the precious metals spotlight.

And Much, Much More…

The exhibit hall has always been a key feature of the ReMA convention, but this year it takes on an even more important role, playing host for a variety of activities. For starters, the opening party will take place in the exhibit hall, and it promises to hold a lot of surprises for attendees as well as allowing everyone a chance to acquaint themselves with what the more than 100 indoor and outdoor exhibitors have to offer. In addition, several parts of the hall will be designated fun and relaxation areas, which will afford attendees a respite from the busy pace of the convention and a comfortable place to network with customers and prospective customers during the convention.

If you still have energy left after all these activities, there are plenty of things to do and see in and around Las Vegas. Famous sights such as Hoover Dam, Death Valley, and the Grand Canyon are only a few hours away by car, and there are many famous shows offered throughout the city. (Call the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority at 7021892-07 11 for up-to-date information on what shows will be presented during the convention.)

And if gambling is your forte, then you need look no further than the Mirage or its next door neighbor, Treasure Island. The MGM Grand is also now open, as well as a renovated Bally's Hotel.

Whatever you decide to do, the convention will offer plenty to do for everyone and the chance to catch up with industry friends and make some additional ones.

The convention exhibition will open Sunday evening, March 19, to host the convention opening party, and will run through Tuesday, March 21. The following list includes exhibitors confirmed as of Feb. 8. Highlighted exhibitors have advertisements in this issue of Scrap Processing and Recycling. Refer to the advertiser index beginning on page 230 to locate an advertisement.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ReMA) (Washington, D.C.) soars into Las Vegas March 19-22 for its 1995 convention and exposition—an industry event that convention organizers promise will be different from past conventions. Indeed, "Catching the Winds of Change," the theme of this year's convention, will be apparent in the physical arrangement of the convention space as well as the planned activities, which include a full program of speakers, committee meetings, workshops, and social events.
