January/February 1989

As the nation focuses more keenly on environmental issues, scrap processors and recyclers face increasing challenges to their operations. Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries members will learn more about these issues and ways to advance their businesses at the association’s second national convention, March 15-18, in Los Angeles.

Many challenges exist for today's recycler, and scrap processors and recyclers are finding that information is often their best tool. The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries' (ISRI) 1989 convention, "Challenges in Recycling," will equip members with the facts and will provide opportunities for exchanges of information, ideas, and experience.

The Century Plaza in Los Angeles will be the site of the association's second annual event March 15-18. Planned are committee meetings, workshops, tours, industry speakers, and a scrap industry exhibition featuring more than 75 firms. The convention will offer occasions for social interchange as well.

On the Industry

Among the industry events scheduled during the convention is a visit to an aluminum rolling mill for young executives on Thursday afternoon, sponsored by the Young Executives Committee. (Register in advance to participate in this event.) The recycling industry exhibition, Wednesday through Friday, will offer the latest in equipment, technology, and services for the scrap processor. Industry workshops each day will include expert speakers, demonstrations, and panel discussions to educate and inform members and guests.

For Your Entertainment

On Wednesday night the "California Spirit" theme party will feature "beach scenes," a film studio's "back lot," and more. On Thursday evening, receptions will be held for young executives and ReMA Paper Stock Institute members. The day for strolling and shopping is Saturday; a shuttle bus to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive departs in the morning. Saturday evening there is a black-tie banquet and show that are not to be missed.

As a special treat, a limited supply of tickets for the 1987 winner of eight Tony awards, Les Miserables, has been reserved for ReMA convention-goers on Thursday and Friday nights. Ticket order forms are being forwarded to members as registration forms are confirmed.

With Spouses in Mind

Spouses will have several opportunities to mingle and explore the vicinity. On Thursday, tour groups can discover Greek and Roman relics at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Norton Simon Museum's 18th century English and French paintings, how movies are made at Universal Studios, and the lavish interior designs of the Phyllis Morris Studio. Spouses' workshops on Friday will offer how-tos as well as techniques for personal enrichment.
