A Vision for the ’90s

Scrap recycling industry members and guests will gather in New Orleans March 9-13 to apply information learned in the erratic ’80s to the bold decade ahead at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries’s 1990 Convention and Exposition.

 The decade of the '80s brought far-reaching changes to the scrap recycling industry, encompassing technological advances in equipment and operations, stepped-up environmental efforts, and modified business relationships. Never ones to sit on the sidelines, recyclers kept up and generally prospered--yet new challenges are ahead for the next decade. The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries's (ISRI) 1990 Convention and Exposition, "A Vision for the '90s," will help industry members prepare for the changes to come.

The convention takes place at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside and Towers March 9-13. Committee meetings, workshops, and expert speakers--along with a jam-packed industry exposition--provide vital opportunities to ensure recyclers' viability through the '90s.

Industry Business

Committees will meet on Friday and Saturday, then committee-sponsored workshops and commodity market sessions that will enlighten convention-goers will be held. Workshops will -cover public- relations, used aluminum beverage cans, safety, transportation, the environment and legislation, processing and equipment, and nonferrous. metals. Commodity spotlights include lead and. zinc, nickel and stainless steel, ferrous metals, copper, precious metals, and aluminum.

The Scrap Recycling Industry Exposition, Saturday through Monday, will present a host of industry equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and service organizations.

Additional industry business includes a chapter presidents meeting Saturday afternoon, a president's breakfast and a Board of Directors meeting Sunday morning, a reception for young executives that evening, general sessions Monday and Tuesday, and a Board of Directors meeting Tuesday morning during which 1990-1991 national association officers will be elected.

Entertainment

If industry pressures have got you down, you'll be in the right town. "The Big Easy"--New Orleans--and convention planners are full of ideas to help you relax and enjoy the area. A new event is an opening night gala, reception, and show set for Saturday evening. The convention goes out with a bang at the New Orleans theme party Tuesday night.

Spouses Programs

Spouses will be kept busy with several educational and entertaining programs. Two on Saturday, "Introduction to New Orleans" and "What to Look for When Shopping for Antiques," offer a taste of local customs and culture. And speaking of taste, reserve a place at one of four sessions on Creole and Cajun cooking Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. A lesson on regional architecture Sunday morning will prepare you for tours scheduled for Sunday and Monday: a tour of Longue Vue and the New Orleans Art Museum, an all-day plantation tour, a stroll through the Garden District to admire its private homes, and a visit to antique galleries. Tuesday afternoon, enjoy a round-robin tennis tournament.

Registration Details

To have your registration credentials prepared prior to your arrival in New Orleans, have your registration forms and fees to ReMA headquarters by Monday, January 15. Otherwise, you may register on the second floor of the New Orleans Hilton Riverside and Towers beginning Friday, March 9, at 11:00 a.m.

Registration is open to representatives of ReMA members in good standing and their guests. Registration forms will be processed at ReMA headquarters in the order in which they are received.
