Plans are being finalized for the Bureau International de la Recuperation (BIR) convention, October 22-25 in Munich. The association's fall meeting, at the Munich Sheraton Hotel, will feature a discussion of municipal waste paper collection in West Germany by an official of one German state with such a program, and a special gathering of the general assembly.

At the general assembly of the association's May meeting in London, a dues increase of 50 percent was proposed to BIR members. The funds were to have been used for programming geared toward addressing environmental concerns and public relations efforts. The proposal was turned down in May, but a revised version--this one with a 25-percent dues increase--is to be proposed at the special general assembly in October.

Division and committee meetings begin on Monday, October 23, when the Textiles Division and Charitable Collections Roundtable, the Plastics Roundtable, the Paper Division, and the Finance Committee have their sessions.

On Tuesday, October 24, the Ferrous Division, Shredder Committee, and Stainless Steel and Special Alloys Committee meet.

The Technical Committee of the Nonferrous Division, the Environment Committee, and the Nonferrous Metals Division hold their meetings Wednesday, October 25.

At all plenary meetings, simultaneous interpretation in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish is provided. Also, minute-by-minute London Metal Exchange and New York Commodities Exchange information is available to convention delegates.

Divisional luncheons, which are reserved for delegates who indicate their interest at registration, offer opportunities for division members to exchange information. For the Paper, Textiles, and Plastics Divisions, the luncheon is Monday. The Ferrous Division luncheon takes place Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Nonferrous Division meets over lunch.

The welcoming reception for BIR Munich convention delegates happens Monday evening at the Kaisersaal of the Residenz, a stateroom in an official building of the Bavarian state. A state official will greet delegates.

In addition to experiencing the many sights and sounds of Munich, interested delegates will get a chance to tour the Bavarian Motor Works.

BIR conventions are open only to BIR individual member firms and to members of BIR national associations. Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) members are eligible to attend and can obtain registration information from ReMA headquarters by calling Dana Divine at 202/466-4050. Anyone else interested in attending must be invited either by a member of the BIR Executive Council or by the secretariat of a BIR national member association.

For additional information on BIR and the Munich conference, contact the BIR general secretariat, Place du Samedi 13-Bte 4, B-1000, Brussels, Belgium; 32/2/217.82.51.  •
