March/April 1992

Guide to ReMA's Convention and Exposition

With 1991 over and new challenges arising in 1992, scrap processors and recyclers are at a crucial time of reassessment. The scrap recycling industry is changing constantly--and drastically--as the decade progresses, which makes prudent business decisions and efficient operations critical. The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) (Washington, D.C.) is helping industry members navigate the current and future market changes at its annual convention and exposition, March 12-14 at the San Francisco Marriott.

The convention offers more than a dozen workshops and commodity spotlights examining critical environmental and legislative issues affecting the industry, as well as market trends for the coming year and beyond.  (See schedule on pages 52-53.)  For the second consecutive year, convention-goers have the chance to visit and conduct business during a special afternoon "trading forum" on Friday, March 13.  In addition, the two-and-a-half-day scrap recycling exposition offers registrants the opportunity to learn about the latest recycling equipment and technology. (See exhibitor list beginning on page XXX.)

San Francisco provides an intriguing backdrop for the convention, giving attendees a chance to mix adventure with their business. The city's renowned restaurants, chic shopping, charming neighborhoods, and one-of-a-kind tourist attractions will surely entice attendees to try to "do it all." To top it all off, ReMA is hosting a gala dinner and show Saturday night, March 14, featuring entertainment by Dolly Parton.

Addressing Critical Issues

After two days of division and committee meetings, the convention's roster of seminars kicks off Thursday afternoon with "Environmental Auditing and Real Estate Transactions." Speakers Michael H. Levin, counsel, Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle; Kelly Nash, environmental manager, secondary metals division, Commercial Metals Co.; and Frank J. Priznar, vice president, Roy F. Weston Inc., will look at such points as the components of an audit, the innocent-landowner defense, protecting audit reports from disclosure, and reporting requirements.

On Friday, following the President's Breakfast, the public relations committee presents a workshop on putting excitement into your company's special events, such as Earth Day 1992 activities, recycling drives, and new plant openings.  Former Sen. Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, will serve as session speaker, accompanied by a panel of communications and news media specialists.

A concurrent workshop looks at how scrap companies can establish material recovery facilities, or MRFs.  Three speakers--John David Isaacs, president, American Iron & Supply Co.; William Lensmyer, vice president, Resource Recycling Inc.; and Stan Norwalk, president, S. Norwalk & Associates--will discuss household recyclables and look at how two scrap firms have handled these "nontraditional" materials successfully.  Another concurrent workshop addresses "Labor Issues in the '90s," with attorneys Bonnie Glatzer and Julie L. Hall, both with Petit and Martin, reviewing the Americans With Disabilities Act and sexual harassment in the workplace.  A workshop on "Banking Issues for the Recycling Industry" is also offered.

Later on Friday, Craig E. Aronoff, professor of management at Kennesaw State College, presents a workshop on "Today's Family Corporation," offering advice on how to ensure the continued success of your family business.  Or attendees can opt to learn "What to Do if You Are Notified That You Are a Superfund Potentially Responsible Party," with comments provided by attorney Daniel M. Steinway, Anderson, Kill, Olick & Oshinsky, and J. Thomas Wolfe, ReMA counsel/manager of government relations.

The workshops continue on Saturday with "Cost-Containment Steps for Your Company," featuring Christopher Charlesbois, president, Advance Metals Recycling; John Lipinski, senior vice president for finance, Tube City Inc.;  and Rick Rifkin, vice president, OmniSource Corp.  A concurrent workshop sponsored by the foreign trade committee presents the remarks of Robert C. Reiley, director of the office of metals, minerals, and commodities, international trade administration, Department of Commerce.  Following is a look at "Selected Topics in Superfund and RCRA," with lawyers Janine Landow-Esser, Holeb & Coff, and Daniel M. Steinway reviewing how these laws will affect scrap recyclers.

Reviewing Market Prospects

The convention also offers spotlights on each scrap commodity, providing up-to-date information from industry experts about current markets and future trends.  Friday features spotlights on lead and precious metals, with Robert M. Smith, president and chief operating officer of American Barrick Resources Corp., providing a market outlook for the latter.

The ferrous spotlight on Saturday morning, titled "How Scrap Quality Affects the Cost of Steelmaking," provides a slate of industry experts:  Michael S. Layfield, general manager, raw materials, Chaparral Steel Co.; Richard Menster, senior purchasing agent, Timken Co.; Mark Millet, melt shop manager, Nucor Corp.; Harvey M. Ulfers Jr., advanced buyer, John Deere Foundry--Waterloo; and Fred Vanore, manager of purchasing, U.S. Steel.

Later in the morning, the copper spotlight features John F. Champagne, vice president of marketing and sales, Magma Copper Co. In the afternoon, A. Stephen Hutchcraft, president, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., and Frederick R. Demler, first vice president and minerals economist, PaineWebber Inc., examine the aluminum and nickel/stainless steel markets, respectively.

Diverse Activities for Spouses

Spouses attending the convention can enjoy two days of tours and events.  On Thursday, March 12, they can catch up with friends at the spouse hospitality suite and get some dining and entertainment tips from a local expert. Masseuses, a tarot card reader, and a palm reader will also be on hand.  Concurrently, two art-related workshops are offered:  Artist Sheri Rice, featured at ReMA's last convention, shows spouses how to create jewelry from found objects;  and, later, attendees can learn Ikenobo Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging.

On Friday, spouses can cross the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy a self-guided tour of Muir Woods, renowned for its gigantic redwood trees, and the Marin Headlands, a coastal wilderness area.  The tour also includes a visit to the Marine  Mammal  Center , which rehabilitates sick and injured sea creatures.

For a more urban experience, spouses can take a guided walking tour of Chinatown or catch the "Sights of San Francisco" motorcoach tour (also offered on Saturday), which shows off the city's highlights.  Culinary-minded spouses can remain at the hotel and learn the Chinese art of preparing dim sum from chefs of the city's best Chinese restaurants.

The excitement continues on Saturday with a wine-country tour.  Spouses will visit several wineries, learn how wine is made, sample a variety of vintages, and enjoy lunch at the Viansa Winery.  Another full-day excursion combines a tour of the city with a trek through Muir Woods and lunch in Sausalito, a quaint artist colony and old fishing village.  Spouses with a botanical bent shouldn't miss visiting the Filoli house and its 16 acres of gardens, which will be at their peak in March.

And finally: While many people tried to escape from Alcatraz --the infamous ex-federal penitentiary--spouses can escape to "The Rock," the city's most popular tourist attraction.  A self-guided audio tour will lead jail-buffs through cell blocks and provide a history of the island prison and its most notorious prisoners.                                                                                                                         --Kent Kiser

Exposition Exhibitors

ReMA's annual convention exposition, which will run from Thursday, March 12, through Saturday, March 14, will feature only indoor exhibits this year.  The following list of exhibitors includes information compiled as of Feb. 3. Exhibitors' booth numbers are contained in a box under the telephone number.  To locate a booth, see the floorplan on pages 56-57.

A [ARROWHEAD] preceding an exhibitor's name indicates that the firm advertises in this issue.  (See the advertiser index, beginning on page 224, to locate any ad.)  For more information on a company's products or services, circle the appropriate number on the SCRAP Action Card found on page 211.

With 1991 over and new challenges arising in 1992, scrap processors and recyclers are at a crucial time of reassessment. The scrap recycling industry is changing constantly--and drastically--as the decade progresses, which makes prudent business decisions and efficient operations critical. The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ReMA) (Washington, D.C.) is helping industry members navigate the current and future market changes at its annual convention and exposition, March 12-14 at the San Francisco Marriott.
